The division of Fremantle covers Perth's southern suburbs. In addition, it also includes Rottnest Island. 

It is one of the original electorates to be contested since the 1901 Federal Election. It has been held by the Labor Party for most of its history, with the conservative parties last holding the seat in the early 1930's.

Incumbent MP:

Josh Wilson, since 2016. He resigned due to a court ruling indicating that his citizenship status at election was deemed have made him ineligible to sit in parliament.

Dorinda Cox is a Fremantle local and an anti-domestic violence campaigner, small business owner and is a former police officer. She is of an Aboriginal background, part of the Noongar Nation.

Political Party: Animal Justice Party.

Katrina Love is the Animal Justice Party's national vice president and also the party's state convener. She is the Campaign Manager for Fremantle community organisation, Stop Live Exports, and has been involved in that campaign for 12 years, and is a very active animal advocate and activist. She also sat on the Animals Australia Executive board as the WA representative for four years

Political Party: Labor.

Josh Wilson has been the MP for Fremantle since the 2016 Federal Election. Before his election, he served as an Associate Lecturer at Curtin University, a paralegal and litigation project manager, a freelance journalist as well as a travel writer. He was a Councillor for the City of Fremantle City of Fremantle from 2009 to 2016 and was Deputy Mayor of Fremantle from 2011. He also worked as a staffer to then-MP Melissa Parke.

John Gray is a former Navy officer and is currently a law student at Notre Dame University. He is a Starlight Children's Foundation entertainer.

Assessment and prediction:

Labor retain

Labor should retain Fremantle in this upcoming by-election. The Greens do have ambitions of gaining this seat but that is unlikely to happen at this stage.
